The Power of Mentoring

Mentorship is a powerful tool for personal and professional development. Whether you’re a seasoned professional, a student, or a colleague, you can benefit from being a mentor or a mentee.

Craig Polk, the technical community program manager for IEEE Future Networks, emphasizes the numerous advantages of participating in the IEEE Mentoring Program.

Enhanced Skills: Through mentorship, you can improve your technical and research abilities while honing your communication and soft skills.

Diverse Connections: Mentoring connects you with people from different companies, organizations, countries, and age groups, expanding your network and perspective.

Continuous Learning: Both mentors and mentees experience continuous growth, learning, and teaching, making it a two-way street of knowledge exchange.

IEEE Guidelines

The Impact of Mentorship

The statistics speak for themselves:

  • 97 percent of mentors found it to be a valuable experience.
  • 89 percent of mentees go on to become mentors.

How the IEEE Mentoring Program Works

If you’re ready to embark on a mentoring journey, here’s a step-by-step guide to get started:

Review Guidelines: Begin by familiarizing yourself with the IEEE Mentoring Program guidelines, which outline the responsibilities of both mentors and mentees.

Complete Your Profile: Log in to your IEEE Collabratec account and ensure your profile is complete with essential information, such as technical interests, expertise, and specialties. A well-detailed profile will help in the selection and acceptance process.

Set Profile Visibility: Make your profile visible to others by configuring your privacy settings to “IEEE member.”

Activate Mentor or Mentee Status: Access all mentoring functionalities through the Career Services button on your dashboard or home page. You can activate either your mentor or mentee status, or even both.

Mentor Preferences: Mentors can activate their status, set their mentee preferences, and wait for requests from prospective mentees.

Select a Mentor: Mentees can browse a list of mentors, refine their search by member grade, society, and technical interests, and send a message to potential mentors to discuss goals and availability.

Request a Mentor: Once a mentee finds a suitable mentor, they can send a mentor request, specifying details like student or working professional status, the length of the relationship, and additional information.

Activate the Partnership: A mentoring partnership status console is displayed, and once a mentor accepts a request, the partnership status changes from pending to active.

Collaborate Effectively: A dedicated workspace is automatically created for mentor-mentee pairs, allowing them to share resources, links, images, videos, and documents, and use the Project Tracker task-management tool.
