Renesas Electronics and SBI Holdings Plan to Build Semiconductor Plant in Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture

Renesas Electronics, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, and SBI Holdings, a prominent Japanese financial group, have announced plans to collaborate on the construction of a new semiconductor plant in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The project aims to bolster Japan’s semiconductor industry and enhance its manufacturing capabilities.

Partnership Announcement:

Last October, Renesas Electronics and SBI Holdings signed a memorandum of understanding with Miyagi Prefecture and JSMC, outlining their joint venture to establish a semiconductor wafer plant in Miyagi Prefecture’s Northern Sendai Second Central Industrial Park.

Collaborative Model:

Under the agreement, SBI Holdings will handle financing, while Renesas Electronics will provide construction assistance and technical support for semiconductor wafer production.

Licensing fees received by Renesas Electronics will be reinvested into the joint venture, JSMC.

Acceleration Plans:

SBI Holdings’ Chairman and President Yoshitaka Kitao expressed intentions to expedite the construction and commissioning of the semiconductor plant by one year, aiming for completion in 2026 instead of the initially projected 2027.

Miyagi Prefecture Governor Yoshihiro Murai has indicated a willingness to accommodate this request.
