Inauguration and Investment

On August 3, 2024, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Limited Chairman N Chandrasekaran performed the Bhumi pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) for the Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.

The project, approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 29, 2024, marks a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor journey.

Production Capacity and Indigenous Technology

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the unique aspects of the plant during the ceremony.

“The construction of the plant commenced within five months of approval. It will manufacture about 4.83 crore chips per day using three major technologies developed in India,” Vaishnaw stated.

Employment Opportunities

The Tata semiconductor plant is expected to create 27,000 jobs, with 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect employment opportunities.

N Chandrasekaran emphasized the project’s impact on the local economy, stating, “This facility will not only generate significant employment but also foster a thriving semiconductor ecosystem in the region.”

Operational Timeline and Talent Development

The plant is slated to become operational in 2025. As part of the India Semiconductor Mission, the government aims to develop a pool of 85,000 skilled professionals.

Nine institutes in the northeast are part of this talent development initiative. These include NIT Silchar, NIT Mizoram, and NIT Manipur. Also involved are NIT Nagaland, NIT Tripura, and NIT Agartala.

Additionally, NIT Sikkim, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, and North Eastern Hill University in Meghalaya are participating.

Strategic Importance

Minister Vaishnaw underscored the strategic importance of the semiconductor industry, stating, “Semiconductor is a foundational industry. The establishment of a semiconductor unit catalyzes downstream employment and upstream opportunities, creating a complex and vibrant ecosystem.”

He also highlighted the plant’s alignment with Prime Minister Modi’s “Act East” policy, which aims to enhance economic and infrastructural ties with India’s northeastern states.

Additional Semiconductor Initiatives

In addition to the Assam facility, Tata Electronics is setting up India’s first wafer fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat. This plant will have a capacity of 50,000 wafers per month and involve an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, further bolstering India’s semiconductor capabilities.
